Pro Athletes Are All Talking About Mindset—Why Aren't We Teaching Mindset To Our Youth?

Updated: Oct 7

Take a look around professional sports today, and there’s one theme that keeps popping up—not talent, not strength, not speed—but mindset.

Kobe Bryant built the Mamba Mentality around it. Michael Jordan spoke often about visualization, mental toughness, and focus under pressure. Simone Biles has publicly discussed the mental challenges of high performance. Even global soccer legend Pelé once said, “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing.” That list? Mostly mindset.

So here’s the question: If mindset is what separates the best from the rest, why aren't we teaching mindset to our youth, high school, or even college athletes?

The Disconnect in Youth Sports

Young Athletes Can Train Their Minds Too

From a young age, athletes are taught how to shoot, pass, dribble, lift, run, and recover. We spend thousands of hours and dollars on private lessons, club fees, travel tournaments, and strength programs. But what about training their minds?

Mental skills like self-talk, confidence, composure, focus, and resilience are often treated as “extra” or ignored completely. At best, they're discussed reactively, after an athlete melts down, burns out, or breaks under pressure. But by then, it’s often too late.

Mindset Isn’t a Luxury—It’s the Foundation

Mindset isn’t something reserved for the elite. It’s what gets you to the elite level. The earlier we teach athletes to recognize the power of their thoughts, habits, and beliefs, the more prepared they’ll be—not just for sports, but for life.

Just imagine a 12-year-old learning how to:

  • Reset after mistakes instead of spiraling

  • Build confidence through affirmations and preparation

  • Visualize success and stay composed under pressure

  • Recognize negative self-talk and replace it with empowering thoughts

That athlete doesn’t just become better at sports. They become better at dealing with school stress, social pressure, and life’s challenges.

What the Pros Know That We’re Missing

The pros don’t just work on mindset because they made it—they made it because they worked on mindset.

They’ve experienced the pressure of championships, the mental exhaustion of long seasons, and the doubt that creeps in after losses. They know that talent and skill will only take you so far. Mindset is the edge.

Yet, we wait until athletes hit their breaking point to start talking about it.

Let’s Flip the Script

Mindset Training for Youth
Make Mindset Part of Your Daily Practice

It’s time we stop treating mindset training like a bonus and start seeing it as essential. Just like we wouldn't send a team into a game without physical practice, we shouldn’t send them into high-pressure situations without mental preparation.

Athletes at every level deserve the tools to build confidence, emotional control, and mental resilience from the start—not after they’ve struggled for years.

If we want our young athletes to thrive in sports and in life, mindset has to be part of the conversation. Every practice. Every season. Every age.

The Importance of Early Mindset Training

Teaching mindset early is crucial. It sets the foundation for future success. When young athletes learn to manage their thoughts and emotions, they become more adaptable. They can face challenges head-on.

Imagine a young athlete who knows how to handle failure. Instead of giving up, they learn to view setbacks as opportunities for growth. This shift in perspective can change everything.

Building Resilience Through Mindset

Resilience is a key component of success in sports and life. It’s about bouncing back from adversity. Mindset training helps athletes develop this resilience. They learn to stay focused and maintain their composure, even in tough situations.

When athletes understand that challenges are part of the journey, they become more persistent. They are less likely to give up when faced with obstacles.

Mindset and Performance

Research shows that mindset directly impacts performance. Athletes with a positive mindset perform better under pressure. They are more likely to achieve their goals. This is why mindset training is essential for all athletes, regardless of their level.
